The theory we've got on this (based upon observation, etc) is that the cable company MultiChannel connect an entire street when a new subscriber joins the scheme, then go down the street cutting the cables from the top junction boxes down to the house (you may see this if you have a look around and see who's meant to be connected). Thus if your street is connected at the local junction box then it's a simple matter to wire yourself in!

There are rumours that MultiChannel occasionally do checks to see if anyone has been wired in illegally but since there are around 70,000 houses in Hull which could be connected the task would be quite sizeable!
